Matagorda Island
State Park
Shuttle Service
Matagorda Island State Park was converted to a Wildlife
Management area earlier this year. While there are no
longer any park personnel on the Island, the facilities are
still open to the public at no cost. The park is about a 30
minute boat ride from Port O'Connor. The park has
camping facilities and also has several miles of paved
roads that lead from the camping area to the beach, to
the Lighthouse and to the Western end of the Island.
Bicycles and hiking are the only means of travel about the
Island. A day of fishing or beachcombing, bird watching
and visits to the historic Matagorda Lighthouse are within
an easy bicycle ride. The beach is about 2 miles from the
camping area and the lighthouse is about 3 miles.
About 2 years ago, the state operated ferry that was used
to take visitors to the park was destroyed by a fire. The
only currently available transportation to and from the
island is provided by local guides.
We provide round trip shuttle service for a flat fee of
$125. For that, we will transport up 6 passengers and as
much gear as we can safely carry. Rarely do we have to
make 2 trips because of loading limits but if necessary, we
charge an extra fee for the additional trip.
We have Rental Bicycles available for $15 per day.
We have Rental Kayaks available for $40 per day.
